Penn State vs. Alabama: A who's who and a what's what

 

PSU fans, it’s time to get your game face on. Tomorrow, the top ranked college football team in the nation — University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide — will play Penn State’s Nittany Lions — No. 18 — in Tuscaloosa. Pundits predict this to be the most watched college football game this weekend, and who are we to argue?

The game starts at 7 p.m. ESPN will broadcast it.

With so many fans glued to the set, we thought we’d take a second to put together the following, designed to help you compare and contrast the teams’ strengths and weaknesses:

PENN STATE

* Founded: 1855 in State College.
* Number of students: 38,630.
* Most popular majors: Business administration and management, engineering.
* Party school ranking: No. 3 on Princeton review’s list.
* Other rankings: No. 2, “Best Career Services”; No. 6, “Best College Newspaper”; No. 6, “Everyone Plays Intramural Sports.”
* Football team: The Nittany Lions play in Beaver Stadium.
* Coach trivia: At age 83, Joe “JoePa” Paterno has coached more bowl games than any other coach in college football history. He has been the Penn State head coach since 1966.
* Mascot: The Nittany Lion is modeled after the mountain lions that used to roam near the school.
* Colors: Blue and white.
* Fight song: “Fight on, State.”

* Heisman trophy winner: John Cappelletti, 1973.

ALABAMA

* Most popular majors: Accounting, general finance and marketing.
* Party school ranking: No. 13 on Princeton’s list.
* Other rankings: No. 6 on the “Lots of Beer” list; No. 8 under “Lots of Hard Liquor.”
* Football team: The Crimson Tide play in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
* Coach trivia: Nick Saban, 58, was hired by Alabama in 2007 for $32 million, making him one of the highest paid college football coaches in the U.S. at the time. He’s also the only coach to win a national championship with two different schools (Alabama and LSU).
* Mascot: An elephant known as “Big Al.”
* Colors: Red and white.
* Fight song: “Yea Alabama.”
* National titles: 13.
* Conference titles: 26.
* Heisman trophy winner: Mark Ingram, 2009.
* Marching band: The Million Dollar Band.
