Indiana University has yet to meet Alabama on the football field.
Unofficially, though, the Hoosier took a 1-0 series lead of the Crimson Tide thanks to an upset on the recruiting trail.
Gunner Kiel, the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2012, reportedly committed to Indiana coach Kevin Wilson on Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 strong-armed passer lives just down the road from the Bloomington campus in Columbus, Ind. He considered Alabama, Oklahoma, Cincinnati and several SEC schools, according to recruiting services.
“It came down to gut feel and where he felt most comfortable,” Kiel’s father Kip Kiel told The Indianapolis Star. “With Alabama there’s obviously a lot of tradition. But coach Wilson has done a great job and there’s a lot of excitement in Bloomington right now. I think Gunner felt that.”
Kiel threw for 2,645 yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior at Columbus East High School.
His commitment to the home-state Hoosiers was considered a huge upset win for Indiana. ESPN.com’s Big Ten writer Brian Bennett even reminded readers it was not April Fool’s Day when reporting the news Wednesday afternoon.
