Right tackle D.J. Fluker was back in the starting lineup after missing the previous four starts with a groin injury. He did see action last Saturday against Mississippi State after Alfred McCullough started. Anthony Steen started at right guard in place of Barrett Jones, who injured an ankle in the game Saturday and did not dress out Thursday. Running back Trent Richardson was held out for the second straight game with a knee injury.
Pick 6
Freshman linebacker C.J. Mosley picked off a pass and returned it 41 yards for a Bama touchdown in the second quarter. Earlier in the season against Florida, Mosley returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.
More picks
Alabama picked off four passes in the game — Mark Barron, C.J. Mosley, Dee Milliner and Chris Jordan — and now leads the nation with 21 interceptions for the season.
McElroy on the mark
Greg McElroy completed 12-of-13 passes in the first half for 159 yards and two touchdowns, setting a school record for completion percentage in a game at 92.3 percent with a minimum of 10 completions. McElroy exited the game with 6:46 to play in the first half with Alabama up 35-0 and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines.
Block that kick
Alabama’s Chavis Williams blocked a punt attempt and Brandon Gibson picked it up on the run and took it in 22 yards for a score midway through the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Georgia State fumbled and Gibson came up with the recovery for the Tide at the Panthers’ 35. Gibson’s touchdown marked the first blocked punt and return for a TD for Alabama since Roy Upchurch blocked a punt against Tulane in the 2008 home opener and Chris Rogers took it in 17 yards for a score.
Long gone
Georgia State’s Albert Wilson got the Panthers on the scoreboard by returning a kickoff 97 yards down the sideline for a touchdown, making it 42-7 at the time.
Try it again
Cade Foster kicked through a 49-yarder in the first quarter, but Alabama was whistled for delay of game. After the 5-yard penalty, Foster tried a 54-yarder which had the distance but was just wide.
The real stuff
Georgia State was playing on a natural grass surface for the first time this season. The Panthers play their home games in the Georgia Dome, which features artificial turf. The team’s other three road gams were played on artificial surfaces as well.
