One of the most highly anticipated springs in recent Alabama memory is set to begin next month.
The Crimson Tide announced Friday spring practice will begin March 21 culminating with its spring game on A-Day set for April 16.
Alabama already is participating in its off-season conditioning program, which began last month.
Plenty of position battles will take place this spring including the fight to be the starting quarterback between redshirt sophomore AJ McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims. Both players hope to earn the job to replace two-year starter Greg McElroy, who helped guide the Tide to the 2009 national championship and SEC title.
McElroy is expected to return March 9 to participate in Alabama's pro day along with other Tide NFL hopefuls, but final details have yet to be announced.
Spring practice will be the first time new assistants Chris Rumph, Jeff Stoutland and Mike Groh will get on the field with their new team. Rumph was hired to replace Bo Davis as the Tide's defensive line coach. Stoutland replaces Joe Pendry as the offensive line coach. Groh replaces Curt Cignetti as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.
Spring practice also is an opportunity for junior college transfers Aaron Douglas, Jesse Williams and Quinton Dial to begin battling for starting jobs. Douglas is expected to battle to replace two-year starter James Carpenter at left offensive tackle while Williams and Dial will battle for spots on the defensive line.
Nine true freshman will get their first taste of college football practices after they enrolled for spring classes last month. They already are participating in the Tide's off-season conditioning program.
The Tide will practice 15 times before the spring game set to kick off at 2 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Last year's game was televised by ESPN with a then-capacity crowd of 91,312 before seating was expanding to accommodate more than 100,000 fans.
